The Goldmark Cultural Center is proud to present “Laminar Flow”, a pop-up exhibition featuring artwork by Goldmark artists Giovanni Gonzalez and Joseph Yeh. “Laminar Flow” is on display in the Goldmark Artists’ Showcase from 4 July 2022 to 17 July 2022, with an exhibition reception on Saturday, 9 July 2022. The artists will be present at the reception to respond to questions or comments about their work.
About the Exhibition:
The visual conception and depiction of aviation in mid-20th century popular media and art were heavily informed by influential contemporary movements in industrial design, commercial illustration, expressionism, futurism, and pop art. The resulting aesthetic milieu is defined by a distinctive visual language that is readily identifiable with a bygone era of streamlined modernity and confidence in technological advancement.
Just a handful of these visual cues, themes, or design choices are enough to recall an entire genre and period of illustration and graphic design, which speaks to the enduring effect and appeal of this visual shorthand even for a modern viewing audience.
The works featured in this exhibition revisit the visual aesthetic codified by popular depictions of mid-20th century aviation, playing on that same visual shorthand to produce original images that strongly resonate with specific historical and cultural memories despite their incorporation of modern mediums, materials, and themes.
About the Artists:
Giovanni Gonzalez is studying for his MFA at the University of Dallas and has been a Goldmark artist since 2020.
Joseph Yeh is the Executive Director of the Goldmark Cultural Center and continues to work on digital illustration in his spare time.
